Counterfeit Toys To Be Sent As Xmas Gifts To Disadvantaged Children

Wed, 19 Oct 2011
Hull City Council is doing its bit to help underprivileged children this Christmas by donating thousands of counterfeit toys to the Operation Christmas Child scheme.

The toys have been seized by Trading Standards Officers as they are copies of branded products, meaning they cannot legally be given away in the UK due to trademark law.

City councillors have decided to donate them to the children's Xmas charity appeal, which is run every year by the Christian charity Samaritan's Purse.

The gifts will be packed into shoeboxes and sent as Christmas presents to kids in Eastern Europe and Africa.

Kathy Webb, Hull and East Yorkshire area coordinator for Operation Christmas Child, said for many of these children it will be the first time in their life they have had a toy to play with.

"We are absolutely delighted to get the campaign under way with this generous donation," she commented.

"I know the current economic climate means times may be lean for some families locally. But many of these children have nothing at all, no access to education or play, and have lost parents through war or famine."

Hull City Council's Trading Standards Manager, Chris Wilson said: "It's the first time we've had such a large seizure of counterfeit toys, and it seems the appropriate way to dispose of them."

The toy donations will form part of the 1.25 million shoeboxes sent out by the charity to children in 15 different countries this Christmas .
