Christmas Lights Switch-On In Coventry Scrapped

Thu, 20 Oct 2011
Residents in Coventry have been left disappointed by the news that the annual Christmas lights switch-on will not take place this year because of renovation work being carried out in the city centre.

Council chiefs said the decision to scrap the festive event, which attracts tens of thousands of people, centres around the £7million revamp of the Broadgate area ahead of next summer’s Olympic Games, but insisted the money saved would be put into other festive-themed family events for December.

They added that Xmas lights will still be put up around the city centre although it is unclear whether a countdown event will take place to turn them on.

A council spokesman said: "The exciting work to renovate Broadgate does mean we are unable to hold the usual light switch on in that area. However, there will still be Christmas lights on throughout the city centre.

"We will also shortly be announcing a whole series of Christmas events aimed at entertaining families visiting the city centre over the whole Christmas period."

Andy Talbot, head of the West Orchards shopping centre, said the renovation work would pay off in the long run.

"There are lots of things happening for the good of the city and to achieve what we want to achieve, these are sacrifices we've got to make. But there will still be things for people to see and do around Christmas and next year could see a huge event."
