Children Asked To Remake Classic Christmas Carol

Fri, 14 Oct 2011
Kids in the small town of Epworth in North Lincolnshire are being encouraged to showcase their writing skills by entering a Christmas Carol competition.

The competition has been launched by Epworth’s Old Rectory, the historic childhood home of John and Charles Wesley - the founders of the Methodist Church.

Charles Wesley was a prolific hymn writer with some 6,000 published and approximately 3,000 unpublished, and now youngsters are being asked to add their twist to one of his best know Christmas Carols - Hark The Herald Angels Sing.

Entrants must rewrite the words to the hymn and use the same tune, without exceeding five verses, or keep the original words and write a new tune in the manner of joy or praise for Christmas.

The competition is open to youngsters in two age categories - seven to 11 and 12 to 18 – and entries can come from schools, Brownies, Guides, Cubs, Scouts and other youth groups.

The winners will perform their hymn at a special Carol Service to be held at the Wesley Memorial Methodist Church in Epworth on Wednesday 7 December. They will also receive prizes, including a tour of the Old Rectory.

Entries must be sent in by Friday 11 November. For more details on the competition and application forms, visit epwortholdrecetory.org.uk.
