Xmas Shoppers To Ramp Up Online Spending On Manic Monday

Fri, 18 Nov 2011
Monday 21st November 2011 is set to be the busiest online shopping day of the year, with UK consumers expected to splash out a total of £424 million on their Christmas shopping .

New research by online comparison site Kelkoo and the Centre for Retail Research estimates that a staggering £17.7 million will be spent per hour, or almost £300,000 a minute, throughout the day as Brits log on one week earlier than usual to kick-start their search for Xmas presents and seasonal gifts .

The study suggests that the busiest online shopping day of the year will arrive one week earlier than 2010 due to people’s concerns about the effect potential snow delays could have on deliveries during the Christmas run-up.

It adds that online retailers will experience a second bumper weekend of shopping at the start of December.

Commenting on the findings, Chris Simpson, chief marketing officer at Kelkoo, said: "With £424 million being spent on just one day, Monday November 21st will be a hugely significant day for online retailers."

"Overall, the six weeks in the run-up to Christmas will be a time for e-tailers to really boost their sales figures at the end of a challenging trading year."

"The great news is that more than £13 billion is going to be spent online during the festive season, which is an increase on last year, so websites will be focused on getting their pricing strategies exactly right to ensure that they attract as many of those pounds as possible."
