US Much Cheaper Than London For Xmas Shopping

Mon, 21 Nov 2011
Britons looking to save money on their Christmas shopping have been urged to head to the United States.

A recent study by the Post Office found that despite the pound's 25 per cent fall in value against the dollar over the past four years, UK consumers can still find prices that are up to 62 per cent cheaper on the other side of the Atlantic in the run-up to Christmas.

The group surveyed the cost of ten 'must-have' items for Xmas - including Ray Ban sunglasses, an iPod Nano, a Ralph Lauren jumper and a selection of toys - and found that the combined cost was £1,296 in London.

By contrast, the basket of festive season goods added up to £716 in New York, £710 in Las Vegas and just £664 in Boston - nearly half that of the English capital.

Sarah Munro, head of travel money at the Post Office, revealed that USA prices are so much lower "that two people could pool their duty-free allowances of £390 and have more than enough to buy all ten items in Boston, New York or Las Vegas".

She added: "When it comes to a battle for the best bargains, Boston wins out because sales tax is lower than in New York and clothing that costs under $175 (£113) is exempt."

"What’s more, Boston package prices are cheaper than New York and the city has shops to match the Big Apple."
