Supermarket Underestimates Demand For Hidden Orange Christmas Pudding

Mon, 28 Nov 2011
Emergency supplies of one of the most popular Christmas puddings have been ordered in by supermarket chain Waitrose following larger-than-expected demand.

Despite tripling their order for Heston Blumenthal’s ‘hidden orange’ dessert this year from 25,000 to 75,000, the upmarket grocer has been surprised by just how popular the celebrity chef's version of the seasonal favourite has been.

The £13.99 Xmas pudding, which has a Valencian candied orange at its centre, hit Waitrose shelves in September but the retailer has already shifted 75,000 units, leading to low supplies in some areas.

Last year some customers were so desperate to get their hands on the Christmas treat they paid as much as £500 for them on eBay, and already hundreds are being offered this year for up to £200 on the auction site.

Waitrose has now stepped up orders to ten times last year's figure to try and keep customers happy.

Replenished stocks of the1.2kg pudding and the new 227g version will hit stores in early December and are expected to sell out within one or two days.

Waitrose has also revealed that sales of Heston Blumenthal’s new pine-scented mince pies, which promise to make the house smell like a Christmas tree, are already breaking records with 75,000 units being snapped up by shoppers in just six weeks.
