Manchester Preparing For Best Ever Christmas Markets

Wed, 09 Nov 2011
People in Manchester will be able to experience the city’s famous Christmas markets next week, which promise to be bigger and better than ever.

The popular European-style stalls, which feature food and gifts from across the continent, will run for more than a month during the build-up to Christmas 2011 and are expected to be even busier than last year, which saw more than 1.3m visitors lured into the city centre.

From November 17, traders from as far afield as Lapland will set up stalls across eight sites. The biggest market will be in Albert Square, where Christmas trees and festive food and drink from countries including Spain, Switzerland and Luxembourg will be on sale.

Regional produce will include Mrs Kirkham’s cheese and homemade jams and chutneys and there will also be crafts and jewellery from across Europe.

Councillor Pat Karney, Manchester’s city centre and Christmas spokesman, said: "It’s a badge of honour that so many towns and cities across the UK have copied Manchester’s Christmas markets, but we are the original and the best – and this year there’s more choice than ever."

"We have the largest Christmas markets in the country and they transform our city centre into a Christmas wonderland. The markets are the centrepiece of our magical festive programme and help make Manchester the UK’s Christmas capital."

Manchester’s Christmas markets are recognised as one of the top 10 in the world and were named the city’s top visitor attraction of 2010.
