Debenhams Slashes Prices For Christmas

Hard-pressed Brits looking for bargain shopping deals in the build-up to the festive season should head to Debenhams after the department store group launched its annual five day pre-Christmas promotion.

The firm today announced that it will cut the prices on tens of thousands of items online and in its 164 UK stores by up to 40 per cent, equating to around £200 million worth of savings .

The "Christmas spectacular" promotion will run from Wednesday 16 November to Sunday 21 with extended store opening hours.

Debenhams said: "The move ... heralds the start of what pundits are predicting will be one of most frenzied Christmases in retail in the last 10 years."

"It comes against a backdrop of job insecurity and rising taxes and will no doubt force the rest of the high street to follow suit."

Retailers across the UK are hopeful of stronger demand this Christmas than last, when sales were hit by heavy snow throughout December.

However, analysts say recent weak trading, partly caused by the unseasonally warm weather, has left stores with high stocks that could lead to widespread discounting in the run-up to Xmas – news that will be much welcomed by cash-strapped British consumers.
