Best Festive Films Of All Time Named

Wed, 30 Nov 2011
It's A Wonderful Life, the 1946 classic starring James Stewart, is the nation’s favourite Christmas film of all time, according to new survey by Radio Times.

The online poll asked readers to choose their top picks from a list of 50 movies set on or based around Christmas .

The number one film was Frank Capra’s tale of a downcast bank manager who intends to kill himself on Christmas Eve but changes his mind thanks to the intervention of a guardian angel, who helps him realise he has made a difference in the world.

Almost a fifth (18 per cent) of the 3,000 votes cast went to It's A Wonderful Life. In second place with 10 per cent of the vote was the Muppet Christmas Carol, starring Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge, followed by Richard Curtis's Love Actually in third spot with 8 per cent.

Completing the top 10 list were Elf (6 pc of the vote), Home Alone (5.7 pc), Miracle on 34th Street (4.92 pc), White Christmas (4.21 pc), Die Hard (4.1 pc), Scrooge (3.68 pc) and Santa Claus (3.18 pc).

Commenting on the unexpected inclusion of the 1988 action-packed thriller Die Hard, Radio Times film editor Andrew Collins, said: "As it is the season to be jolly, I won't disguise my rosy-cheeked joy that the poll named Die Hard one of the top 10 Christmas movies of all time."

He added: "Set on Christmas Eve, it's just as capable of producing festive tingles as the more traditional, December-released Muppet Christmas Carol or the cockle-warming Love Actually, which was literally gift wrapped in 2003 with a lovely red ribbon tied around its twinkling poster image."
