Christmas Comes Early For Young Winner Of Luxury Mince Pie

Wed, 21 Dec 2011
A six-year-old boy from east London is set to enjoy a famous Christmas after winning the world's most expensive mince pie .

The £3,000 luxury Christmas treat, which has a 99 per cent pure platinum coin – worth £600 - at its centre, is now in the hands of Mukund Soni who won the pie in a raffle at the Marvellous Mince Pie Manufactory in Ilford.

The dessert was created by 25-year-old luxury food designer Andrew Stellitano over 10 days using a 17th Century recipe, Victorian moulds and modern-day technology.

Stellitano used vanilla beans and cinnamon from eastern spice markets and then brushed the pie with eggnog, gilded it with platinum leaf and dusted it with ambergris sugar - a bile excreted by sperm whales that sweetens over many years floating on the ocean.

The pastry was also bound together using holy water from Lourdes – the famous market town in the foothills of the Pyrenees.

Mukund's father Mahendra Soni said: 'Winning the world’s most expensive mince pie has been a big surprise this Christmas . "

"My wife and I have been thinking of buying gifts for the children so this is a fantastic additional present for them. We’re looking forward to inviting friends over for a celebration."
