Christmas 2010 will be the best Christmas for retailers since before the recession, according to retail analysts Verdict Research.
The group said that despite the prospect of spending cuts and job losses, high street sales are likely to increase by £1.6 billion in the three months to Christmas to £85.2bn, the highest rise in sales since the last quarter of 2007.
Online sales are predicted to account for £1.2 billion of the extra spending and 9.5 per cent of all Xmas sales, with more consumers turning to home shopping .
The Verdict forecast also revealed that clothing, food and grocery and health and beauty products will produce the largest increases in sales, with people choosing to spend more on these items than big ticket products such as TVs and other large electricals .
Furthermore, smartphones and tablet PCs such as the iPad will continue to prove popular in the run up to Christmas but at the expense of the iPods, portable media players and cameras which have been the staple gifts of previous festive periods.
