John Lewis Launches Mobile Site Ahead Of Christmas

Tue, 12 Oct 2010
High street retailer John Lewis has launched a mobile-optimised version of its website in a bid to widen access to its online services in the run-up to the busy Christmas period.

The department store’s new mobile site, which went live yesterday (Monday 11 October), can be accessed from any 3G or WiFi-enabled mobile handset by typing m.johnlewis.com into the phone’s internet browser.

Alternatively, users can access John Lewis’s standard website (www.johnlewis.com), which will then redirect them to the mobile portal.

In addition to the mobile-optimised site, John Lewis is also working with a US software developer to create a mobile application for smartphones .

Jonathon Brown, head on online selling John Lewis, said that the company decided to launch a mobile site before the web app to allow as many customers as possible to access the company’s online services ahead of the Christmas sales push.

"We consciously chose a mobile site rather than smartphone applications so that we could offer all our customers the same access," he commented.

"We felt it was more important for customer experience to have a transactional mobile site up and running for peak Christmas trading than smartphone apps ."

He added that the forthcoming app would not replace the mobile site, but would instead provide another option for the growing number of online shoppers.
