York Declared The Christmas Capital Of Britain

Mon, 22 Nov 2010
York is the number one place in the UK for Christmas spirit and festive season celebrations, according to the city’s Lord Mayor.

Councillor Susan Galloway has declared the city the "Christmas capital" of Britain and has challenged other locations across the country to try and match the city’s festive atmosphere.

She said: "From St Nicholas’ Fayre in November to the beautiful Service O Nine Lessons And Carols in the inspiring York Minister on Christmas Eve, we want everyone to know that nowhere in the country can beat York for throwing itself into the festive spirit."

"Whether it is a contemporary or classic Christmas experience you want, anyone coming to York from November onwards will be amazed by what this extraordinary city has to offer.

"I’d encourage anyone in search of some festive fun to come and see for themselves. I truly believe York is the country’s ‘Christmas Capital’."

Her comments were echoed by Dr John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York, who said the city had "a real buzz" at this time of year.

"Across York, local people are determined to show visitors the warmest of welcomes and to ensure everyone enjoys the city’s unique atmosphere and the many Christmas events and activities it has to offer," he commented.

The praise comes as York prepares for Christmas with a host of events and attractions in the coming weeks, including the Festival Of Angels, the Christmas markets and a programme of performances at York Minster, including Handel’s Messiah and Carols By Candlelight.
