Xmas Presents Snatched From Doncaster Church

Mon, 08 Nov 2010
Thieves have ruined Christmas for a number of underprivileged children by stealing presents from a church in Doncaster.

Twelve shoe boxes containing gifts and electrical items donated to a charity for deprived children were taken from Hexthorpe Methodist Church last week.

The church had collected the presents from the congregation as part of Operation Christmas Child - the world’s largest Christmas charity shoebox appeal. The scheme gives people the chance to make up a gift-filled shoebox via the charity’s website and have it sent out to a child in need overseas.

The Reverend John Hartley said 12 children who would have received a Christmas gift from Santa for the first time will have to go yet another festive season without one.

Mr Hartley said the thieves also caused damage to the church during the break-in, but stressed that "the material things, the electrical goods and even the damage" were secondary.

"People have made these shoe boxes in order to give them to children who probably have never been given a Christmas present at all in their lives - that's the most disturbing feature of this," he added.
