White Christmas In Britain A Foregone Conclusion

Mon, 13 Dec 2010
Britain is almost certain to have a white Christmas this year with a second big freeze expected to arrive on Thursday and continue into the New Year, forecasters have revealed.

Positive Weather Solutions, who specialise in long-term weather forecasts, said they expect bitterly cold winds from the Arctic to cover London, the north and the south-east of England and Scotland in snow on Christmas Day .

Jonathan Powell, a senior forecaster at the company, said: "A white Christmas is more or less a foregone conclusion and the data has almost consistently been saying that."

"After initial snow this week there will be milder air to the north and colder air to the north. The cold line will push down from the north and we will see snow."

"It is looking most favourable in the north-east, the east and south-east part of the country and in Scotland . There will also be snowfall in London ."

"'I think you will see more than a few snowflakes . The potential is there for a covering or at least a dusting. Our models consistently show there will be snow."

He added that temperatures on Christmas Day are unlikely to get above -1C in England and -4C in the Highlands in Scotland .

The Met Office said there was a "possibility" of a white Christmas this year, but stressed that long-range forecasts are notoriously difficult to predict.

It did confirm, however, that parts of Scotland will see up to six inches of snow on Thursday while coastal areas of England in the west could see up to four inches.
