More than 70,000 homes across the UK will be targeted by thieves over the festive season, according to a new study by More Than Home Insurance .
The insurer surveyed 50 reformed burglars and found that a thief is most likely to strike a property between 1.55am and 2.18am on Christmas day .
Nearly 84 per cent of the former thieves said opportunities to steal increase greatly over the Christmas period because people are less alert due to drinking too much alcohol, are less vigilant with security and tend to leave their homes empty when visiting friends and family.
According to the former thieves, almost half of intruders go straight for the Christmas tree with a very clear idea of what they are looking for and 8 per cent of thieves actually steal Christmas trees .
Experts are advising homeowners to keep presents out of sight, to leave a light on when heading out and to avoid using social media websites such as Facebook to update friends of their whereabouts.
