Fake Gifts Warning For Xmas Shoppers

Wed, 22 Dec 2010
Festive shoppers in the UK have been warned to be on their guard for fake Christmas gifts .

The UK Border Agency states that many goods, including ghd hair straighteners, Ugg Boots and jewellery, are often not authentic and items such as fake electrical goods could even be dangerous, as they are unlikely to have been through the same safety checks as the real product.

The Agency also warns that counterfeit items purchased online from overseas suppliers are likely to be stopped and seized at the border.

The warning comes after a recent YouGov survey carried out for the charity Crimestoppers found that 30 per cent of UK adults have bought something that they thought was authentic, only to later find out it was a fake.

Grant Miller, assistant director of the UK Border Agency's International Trade Division at Heathrow, said: "Many of us are looking to get a bargain over the Christmas period, but counterfeit goods are often dangerous and the proceeds can be used to fuel serious organised crime. Fakes also cheat British taxpayers and undercut honest businesses.

"UK Border Agency officers work tirelessly to stop counterfeit goods getting in to the country and are highly trained to spot fakes.

"My message to the public is straightforward: if something appears too good to be true, it probably is."
