Britain Facing Xmas Gift Shortage

Fri, 03 Dec 2010
People across the UK have had their Christmas shopping plans hit by the wintry weather conditions, which are preventing goods from reaching Britain’s high streets.

Thousands of Christmas presents made in the Far East and destined for UK retailers and highs street stores have become stuck at UK ports and distribution centres, which have been affected by the heaviest pre-Christmas snowfall for a generation.

The four biggest container ports in the South of England are working round the clock to clear a huge backlog of clothes, games, toys, computers and electronics after being forced to close.

With the trend for last-minute ordering and the freezing weather set to continue, experts have warned that the country could face an unprecedented Christmas present crisis.

Distribution expert Grant Liddell, of Uniserve, said: "If the icy conditions continue there are going to be shortages."

Meanwhile, new research has revealed that around £2 billion will be spent by UK parents on Christmas gifts this year.

A survey by insurance firm LV= found that mums and dads will spend £168 on presents per child this Christmas and £20 on stocking fillers .
