Christmas Shoppers Boost Sales At John Lewis

Tue, 20 Oct 2009
High street retailer John Lewis has reported a great start to its Christmas shopping season, with sales at its department stores increasing by more than 14 per cent last week.

The company said the first full week of festive season trading resulted in sales rising by 14.7 per cent to £55.4 million, its highest figure since 2006.

Sales were up in almost all areas of the business, including online sales which soared by 45 per cent in the week to Saturday 17 October.

Total group sales were also boosted by the opening of the group’s 28th store in Cardiff.

Commenting on the figures, John Lewis director Andrew Murphy said: "Customers' buying patterns from last week tell us that we are now well into the foothills of the steady climb to Christmas ."

"How we respond to this over the next 10 weeks will be the major factor in determining how successful 2009 is."

Howard Archer, an economist at Global Insight, said the latest sales figures indicated that UK retail sales have picked up considerably since August.
