Brits Delaying Xmas Shopping And Cutting Festive Budgets

Fri, 20 Nov 2009
Millions of cost-conscious shoppers across the UK are planning to do part of their Christmas shopping in January to save money, new research has revealed.

An online survey by website PriceGrabber.co.uk found that nearly half (47 per cent) of UK consumers will do between 10 per cent and 50 per cent of their festive shopping in the January sales.

However, it also revealed that many consumers started their Christmas shopping early this year, with a fifth of respondents saying they bought their presents in October, 10 per cent in September and 14 per cent over the summer.

Just over 40 per cent said they will cut costs by buying fewer gifts for their extended family, 38 per cent said they plan to shop at discount stores, and 7 per cent said they will save money by making their presents at home.

Two-thirds of those polled said they will look on the internet to ensure they were getting the best price for the presents, while 10 per cent will buy gift vouchers to make sure they stay within their budget.

Consumer group Which? recently advised bargain-hunters to shop online for the best deals on Christmas presents .

The group compared a basket of 27 typical Xmas gifts bought online and from high street stores, and found that the online basket was almost £400 cheaper than the high-street basket of goods.
