Popular Christmas Tree In Short Supply

Fri, 11 Dec 2009
Brits have been warned that they might not be able to get their hands on the most popular type of Christmas tree this year due to short supply.

Imports of the hugely popular Nordmann Firs from Denmark have fallen sharply due to the weakness of the pound against the euro, which has seen the cost of imported trees rise by an estimated 30 per cent in 2009.

Nordmann Firs have been a UK best seller for a decade, accounting for around half of all Christmas trees sold in Britain each year.

Some 2.5m trees are usually shipped from Denmark every year, but this year’s supply of the tree species has fallen to just half a million as a result of the weak value of the pound.

Roger Hay, of the British Christmas Tree Growers' Association, said: "People shouldn't panic. The number of Nordmann Firs being grown in the UK is increasing and by next year there will be enough to satisfy demand."

Mr Hay explained that the popularity of Nordmann Firs is due to the fact that they drop fewer needles, are softer and less prickly than other trees, and can comfortably hold decorations.

But he added that there are many other species to choose from, including home-grown variety like the Scots Pine or Douglas Fir .

This weekend is expected to be the busiest of the year for Christmas tree sales .
