Britons are stocking up on turkey alternatives for the upcoming festive season, according to supermarket chain Waitrose .
The upmarket grocer revealed that sales of alternatives such as three-bird game roasts, which consist of either pheasant, partridge and mallard or turkey, duck and goose roasted together, increased by over 40 per cent in the week to November 28, compared to sales for the same period last year.
The Waitrose figures also showed that sales of dry-aged turkey, which has a stronger taste than ordinary turkey, soared by 82 per cent during the week, while organic turkey sales rose by 47 per cent compared with last year.
Sales of goose, another Christmas dinner alternative, shot up by 37 per cent, but the biggest increase in demand was for lamb, with trade over the week soaring by a massive 255 per cent.
Waitrose also reported a significant rise in sales of currants and raisins - the ingredients to make the traditional Christmas pudding .
Total sales at Waitrose for the week ending November 28 were up 14 per cent, suggesting most consumers are already getting prepared festive celebrations.
