Supermarket Turkey Supplies Under Threat

Fri, 28 Nov 2008
Christmas dinner preparations may be hit by a shortage of turkey supplies following strike threats by Britain’s meat inspectors.

Unison, the union that represents around 1,000 Meat Hygiene Service (MHS) workers in the UK, revealed that inspectors voted two to one in favour of strike action following a row over cuts to overtime payments and the introduction of a 'work anytime' system, which they fear could disrupt family life.

The organisation warned the action could seriously disrupt supplies of red meat, white meat and poultry to supermarkets in the crucial run up to Christmas .

It added that the sector may lose millions of pounds if the strike goes ahead because of the huge popularity of turkeys at this time of year.

Unison national officer Simon Watson said: "This is a decisive vote for strike action and shows the strength of feeling of meat inspectors.

"Unless the employers abandon their plans and get back around the table to negotiate a settlement, the industry could lose millions of pounds in lost meat production in the run-up to Christmas ."

Initial talks to resolve the issue took place at the MHS offices in York on Monday but the MHS confirmed no agreement was reached, and further talks are scheduled to take place later today.

MHS chief executive Steve McGrath said he is hopeful that a settlement can be reached before any industrial action takes place.
