Humans arent the only ones prone to over indulging at Christmas . A new survey reveals that four out of ten dogs will be over-fed at Christmas, leaving 29 per cent of the dog population on a diet by New Year.
The survey by Wholesome Nutrition Ltd found that one in four of the UKs dogs will eat mince pies, and 17 per cent will consume Brussels sprouts. However most dogs prefer sausages (62 per cent) and turkey (75 per cent), with one in five dogs eating Christmas pudding and Christmas cake .
After feasting on all this, 43 per cent of dogs eat too much as do 57 per cent of their owners.
Kit Sadgrove, Founder of Formula K produced by Wholesome Nutrition Ltd said, "People are treating their dogs as part of the family. As far as Christmas over-indulgence is concerned, this survey shows you can hardly tell them apart."
Other favourite nibbles are garlic bread, chips with gravy and Yorkshire puddings . But favourite Christmas foods are roast potatoes, ice cream, Chewits and cat biscuits.
Over eating at Christmas is not a regional thing. Owners from all over the country indulge their dogs. However people are finally getting the message that chocolate is dangerous for dogs. One person in a hundred would give chocolate to their dog.
At Christmas Eve the majority of dogs will get a Christmas stocking and 88 per cent will receive presents. Only six per cent of owners would not give human treats to their dogs.
Kit Sadgrove said, "Were reminding dog owners not to over-indulge their dogs at Christmas."
