Shortage Of Nintendo Wii Consoles Expected In Run-Up To Christmas

Thu, 15 Nov 2007

Gaming giants Nintendo have warned that its super-selling Wii games console could be in short supply over the up-coming festive period.

The news is set to be a massive disappointment for those hoping for a Nintendo Wii this Christmas, according to the BBC, with reports that UK retailers are apparently facing a struggle to keep up with demand for the popular console .

A Nintendo spokesperson told the BBC that demand for the Wii has outstripped expectations, and warned that customers may struggle to find the console on store shelves towards the end of the year, despite Nintendo's promise to ship an extra 3.5 million Wii consoles globally between in the year to end of March 2008.

"The demand for Wii hardware globally has been unprecedented and higher than Nintendo could ever have anticipated," the spokesperson said.

A spokeswoman for high street retailer Woolworths said the consoles were selling out as soon as new stock arrived at its stores. "Our advice to customers trying to get hold of the consoles is to keep an eye on woolworths.co.uk," she said.

The Nintendo Wii was launched in the UK last year and has rapidly become the UK’s best selling games console, largely due to the host of interactive games - aimed at people of all ages - on offer and prices that beat rival consoles such as the PS3 from Sony and Microsoft’s XBOX 360 .
