With only 52 days to go until the big day, UK shoppers are being urged not to waste their money as they hunt for Christmas presents following new research .
A study published by Morgan Stanley reveals that Britons are likely to be throw away a total of £1.7 billion of Christmas presents in the New Year .
"Shoppers can save much more during the festive period without having to "skimp" on traditional Christmas purchases," said Patrick Muir, marketing director at Morgan Stanley.
"The sales are expected to start early again this year and savvy shoppers will be able to save money by shopping around for that perfect Christmas gift," he said.
"The festive season can hit pockets hard and there is nothing more irritating than feeling like money has been wasted," he added.
Jason Robinson, director of savings operations at Morgan Stanley, warned people not to spend a lot of money over Christmas to ensure that 2007 remains "fruitful".
