Danish Air Force compensates Santa Claus

Mon, 03 Oct 2005
A part time Santa Claus has successfully claimed compensation from the Danish Air Force for killing his reindeer.

The animal, called Rudolf, died of heart failure when two fighter jets roared over his farm. Two reindeer owned by Olavi Nikkanoff were kept at his farm in central Denmark when the F16 jet flew at low altitude over the farm in February.

Rudolf collapsed and died. Nikkanoff complained to the Air Force as he was left with only one reindeer to pull his sleigh at Christmas. The Air Force duly agreed to compensate Nikkanoff for the cost of the animal and any vets fees totalling $5,000. A spokesman for the Air Force, Captain Morten Jensen said, "We got a letter from Santa complaining about his reindeers death and looked into it seriously."

They checked information relating to the flight path and veterinary reports and concluded the fighter jets had caused the reindeers death.

Nikkanoff said the money would be used to buy a new reindeer in time for Christmas.
