Dreams of white Christmas melting

Tue, 20 Dec 2005

The weather outside won’t be very frightful this weekend, so forget about any dreams of a white Christmas.

Darrel Smith, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Topeka, said about the chances of a white Christmas, "Doesn’t look like it is going to happen."

"There’s going to be a big warm-up," said Smith.

Dr Richard Wild, weather services commercial manager and senior meteorologist for the internet site Weathernet.co.uk, said, "Based on current weather charts, the chance of Northern Ireland seeing snow on Christmas Day is zero."

Dr Wild recently completed a thesis on heavy snowfalls across Britain. With less than a week to go before Christmas Day, the weather expert had predicted a dry and sunny day as opposed to a white Christmas.

He said, "The current weather forecast for Northern Ireland on Christmas Day is dry, light and variable winds with sunny spells and with average temperatures for late December."

Also agreeing that Ulster will not be experiencing a white Christmas was a spokesman for the PA Weather Centre.

The spokesman agreed that dry weather is predicted for Sunday 25 December, with temperatures set to reach six degrees.

He said, "I wouldn't put any money on there being a white Christmas in Northern Ireland. Like many places in the UK, there was a white Christmas last year and it's unusual for this to happen two years in a row.

"It looks like being dry on Christmas Day with temperatures of around six degrees, which is average for this time of year.

"However, there are hints at this stage of colder and more wintry weather between Christmas and the New Year."
