Bromsgrove residents are being warned to take extra care to avoid the risk of fire this Christmas.
With extra hazards and distractions at this time of year, more than 11 per cent of house fires occur in December alone. The fire service is encouraging residents to follow key tips to help them stay safe this winter.
They include urging residents to check smoke alarms regularly, keep decorations, cards and wrapping paper away from open fires and heaters, never leave candles unattended and always turn off fairy lights when going out or to bed.
They also suggest not to overload electrical points. Only have one plug in each socket and make sure appliances are switched off when not in use.
Those drinking this Christmas should take special care when cooking or smoking as alcohol lowers awareness.
Residents should check older relatives and neighbours are not at risk from fire, and prepare an escape plan for their home, ensuring family and guests know the location of doors and window keys.
Chris Blake, Hereford and Worcester Fire Services community safety officer, said: "We dont want to dampen spirits, but we do want to raise awareness of the danger and destruction an overloaded socket or an unattended candle can cause.
"By following these simple tips hopefully we can all enjoy a peaceful and fire safe Christmas."
